The 16 Mahajanapadas

The transition from tribes to powerful territorial states. Magadha, Kosala, Vatsa, and Avanti emerged as the most dominant kingdoms in the Gangetic plains.

Political Shift: Emergence of Monarchies (Rajyas) and Republics (Ganasanghas).

Gautama Buddha (Buddhism)

Siddhartha Gautama attained Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. He taught the Middle Path and the Four Noble Truths to end human suffering.

Lord Mahavira (Jainism)

The 24th Tirthankara who reorganized Jainism. He emphasized Ahimsa (Non-violence) and the Three Jewels: Right Faith, Knowledge, and Conduct.

Legacy: A strong focus on truth, non-stealing, and spiritual purity.

Rise of Magadha Empire

Under rulers like Bimbisara and Ajatashatru, Magadha became the center of power. Strategic resources like iron and fertile land helped build a massive army.

Capital: Pataliputra (modern-day Patna).

Foreign Invasions

Cyrus and Darius of Persia reached the Indus. In 326 BC, Alexander the Great invaded the northwest, leading to the famous Battle of the Hydaspes against King Porus.

The Nanda Dynasty

Mahapadma Nanda founded the first great non-Kshatriya dynasty. His successor, Dhana Nanda, possessed an army so vast it deterred Alexander's forces from advancing further east.
